The CVC Book and Resource CD were designed to give children more practice reading words that have the "consonant-vowel-consonant" spelling pattern.  These types of words are supposed to be "easy" for children to read, and therefore tend to be glossed over by many publishing companies in their beginning reading materials.  However, I have found that children often need extended practice in sounding out these three letter words in order to feel comfortable with them.  They also need a chance to practice them within the context of the sight words that they are learning.  Therefore, I created this resource to give children the opportunity to practice these words along with the most basic sight words, and then added in a few more new sight words with each new vowel sound.

In my class, we first practice blending sounds together to make words, without ever looking at any letters.  We start with two sounds, and then work our way up from there.  When the children seem to have mastered blending sounds together, I then have them try to do it while we look at the letters and read the words.

In this game, the children are each given either a CVC word card or picture card. Then, when the music starts, they are supposed to hop around the room until they find the person in the room that has the CVC card that matches their card, and hold that person's hand. Then we go around the room and check to see if everyone has found the correct partner.

After that, we practice matching the words with the pictures and play the bingo games for each vowel sound.  When the children are comfortable with a new set of words, then I send the student flashcards home with them.  (These flashcards match the ones that we have been working with at school.)  Then, I start sending the worksheets home for homework.  We often do the hardest worksheet together in class (the one with all of the sentences on the bottom, which is the fifth worksheet in each vowel series), so that I can listen to each child in a small group read some of these sentences to me.

This is important to me because it uses the very same sight words and CVC words that they have encountered in their Houghton-Mifflin reading series, but in sentences that they have not yet seen before.  Since many of my students will often memorize the stories in their reader, and this helps me determine if they really have mastered this set of words.  The sound sorting worksheets at the end of each unit are there if your students need additional practice, or need to review the words when they are mixed up with similar words with different vowel sounds in the middle.
